Fitness Motivation: Reason to Keep Running
If we rely on the way we feel in the moment, we will fail. However, if we focus on the way we feel because of what we choose to do right in that moment, we will succeed.
I don’t really always like the feeling of running. Sometimes my runs are amazing – when the temperature is just right, the breeze if blowing against me, the sun is out but not beating down on me, and when all the stars are all aligned (kidding). Sure, I have good days, but most days, I’m just putting in the time. I’m doing it because I know I need it.
Although my runs make me feel good, somehow I still have the tendency to procrastinate. And when I do run, although I make the most of it and “enjoy” it as much as one can, there is still a part of me that wants to fight every step. When this happens, I think of my mantra below. I think about what running is doing for my body at that very moment. I think about how I feel afterwards. I think about how the discipline shapes me and grows me. And when I think of all of the benefits, I can actually say I enjoy running – not because I love the feeling of running, but because it makes me love the feeling of living. 🙂

I totally agree and can completely relate. I’m a total procrastinator too! Getting and staying fit and healthy involves having discipline and that means doing things we really don’t feel like doing and making sacrifices sometimes. This reminds me a lot of something I heard about eating habits from a very wise woman named Nell Jones who has maintained a 30+ pound weight loss for more than 40 years. Here’s what she said:
“Personally I have rules for myself that involve what I eat. We all have rules, from flossing our teeth every night to dressing for church. And people who have those rules find them automatic, and follow them even when others don’t. Why not with food? Does it mean I like to eat any less than other people? Of course not. But I live by my rules, not just the ones that are comfortable at the time. Sometimes I am so tired I’d like to skip flossing but I don’t. Sometimes I’d like to have McDonald’s french fries (they are SO good!!) but I don’t. Over the days and months and years it gets easier, but there is no secret to doing them. It’s the same discipline.”
Makes a lot of sense and explains why she’s had so much success in keeping off the weight!
