A Head Start to a New You: 7 Steps to Get Fit & STAY Fit!
The New Year is just around the corner, so why not get started NOW!? (There is no good reason to wait so don’t even bother wasting your breath or typing fingers! Throw out the excuses now and get ready for action!)
The hardest step to getting fit is the first step.
We ponder, we search and we even dream of getting fit, but we often get hung up at the start line because we have no idea how to begin or where to go. And even if we know what to do we procrastinate, waiting for the stars to align and to get that magical motivation (which never happens by the way) – and when that fails, we wait on the New Year to get started as if that is the only time of year to start working out. I’m here to end your losing streak and give you a headstart for a brand new you in 2012!
After 20 years in the business, I’ve personally learned how to fail and how to succeed. In my opinion, many people spend too much time trying to figure out what to do, and not enough time on how to make sure it actually gets done. The difference between struggling and succeeding rarely is determined by the actual exercise or diet plan you choose. The challenge is once you CHOOSE it, you continue to DO it.
Whether this is your very first attempt to get healthy, or you just need to take it up a notch, there are certain steps you will need to put in place so your new routine not only starts, but sticks!
Get Fit – and STAY Fit!
#1 PREPARE! – You can’t eat healthy if you don’t shop healthy – and it’s hard to lift weights if you don’t have any weights to lift. There is a certain amount of preparation required for success. Whether you need to get some new tennis shoes, join a gym, find an online program (like our Free BCx Boot Camp online at FitStudio) or you map out a new jogging route – there is a certain amount of planning you must do before you even begin.
#2 Go PUBLIC! – Publicly announce your plan to get fit. Tweet, facebook, email and blog about your new mission to increase your chance of success. Many people secretly tackle their goals which makes it a little too easy to give up. The more people who know your plan, the more accountability and support you will have on your journey.
#3 PLAN! – You’ve heard the saying “if you fail to plan, plan to fail”. This couldn’t be more true when it comes to eating healthy. I’ve found people are more likely to blow off their workout if they blow their diet – which normally happens when people fail to plan their meals and snacks out ahead of time. Whether it’s the feeling of defeat, or the fact that crappy food just makes you feel crappy, you are more likely to keep on track in the gym if you keep on track with your eating. Planning ahead can be as simple as grabbing a cheese stick, apple and lean cuisine for the day, or it can be as complex as cooking your food ahead of time and putting in tupperware. No matter what route you go, planning ahead will boost your chances for success.
#4 POWER UP! – Power up your day by starting it off right. Since your metabolism follows your blood sugar, you can get your blood sugar up one of two ways -mechanically or dietarily. This means you can power up with a morning jog or by eating a healthy breakfast. Think of it like putting your sails up for the day. It’s hard to put wind in your sails if you never put your sails up to begin with.
#5 PACK UP! – Always be packed and ready to get your fitness on. If you live a crazy on-the-go life like me, you will need a well-packed gym bag. Although you should plan your workout schedule ahead of time, schedules change, so you should always be prepared for a last-minute.

#6 PAIR UP! – Don’t do fitness alone! A workout partner makes working out more fun. I promise there is someone who needs you as much as you need them. Whether you workout with a friend, you make the opportunity to make new friends in a class setting, or you have a virtual workout partner to keep you in check – you are more likely to succeed if you have a buddy getting fit with you.
#7 PERFECT IT! – Don’t expect perfection overnight! Give yourself a chance to perfect and tweak your routine. It may take some time to find your groove and discover the right workout, ideal time, and realistic goals. Be patient with fitness. Everyone is different and it may take some trial and error until you find the perfect fitness plan for you!
