Don’t Be Fooled by Weight Loss Gimmicks

In today’s society, you can’t watch TV for any length of time without seeing a commercial for a diet pill, exercise machine, weight loss program, fitness gimmick or exercise video. Unfortunately, preying on the overweight and discouraged has become a big business. I hate to hear the ridiculous ads and false claims that flood the airwaves and confuse the public. No wonder healthy living seems so complicated.


Here are a few helpful tips to help you weed through weight loss gimmicks.

1. Use common sense. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Why do we treat our health differently than we do the rest of our life?  If we saw a commercial that advertised an extremely low investment with a high return we’d know there is something wrong, yet that is exactly what these companies are doing. People want us to believe that we can get great results on very little effort, but we can’t. Exercise and diet takes a little work. The amount of effort you put it in dictates your return. It’s pure and simple – no gimmicks, no tricks.

2. Stick to the facts. Invest your time and money in products that are based on factual information. There are many helpful tools, like www.FitStudio.com, powered by Sears, which offer trustworthy guidance and helpful diet and exercise tips without trying to sell a specific product or gimmick.

3. Don’t believe the hype. I don’t care what celebrity is doing it or how cool it sounds; it doesn’t mean that you should try it or that it even works. Avoid the temptation of trying what’s hot for the moment. I mean, really! Who can keep up?! The Cabbage Soup diet, Greek diet, No-Carb Diet, Blood Type Diet, Grapefruit diet, LA diet, Beverly Hills diet, Sugar Busters Diet – I could go on and on. The key to success is consistency. It is very difficult to be consistent with diet fads – that’s why they call them fads! Fads come and go. Even if the diet is based on sound principles and caloric guidelines, the fad part of the diet is not normally something you can maintain long term.

4. Listen to the pros. I bet you don’t just let anyone give you advice on your taxes or cut your hair. Why in the world would we treat our health any differently? For some reason we changed the rules when it comes to diet and exercise. We’ll take advice from just about anyone and spend more money on just about anything besides our health. Where are our priorities? Don’t hesitate to hire a professional to help you reach your goals.

5. Go back to the basics. Exercise and diet works so why waste your money on anything else. Save your money for things that can enhance your exercise and diet routine like a new pair of tennis shoes, an iPod, workout clothes, gym membership, pedometer, calorie guide, diet supplements, personal trainer, educational books or a subscription to your favorite magazine. The right purchases can help mentally and physically prepare you for success.
