Spira Runners Review: 1,000 Mile Running Shoes
Runners isShoes
If you’re a runner, and you feel like you never really love your shoes as much as those first few weeks after you buy them, you are not alone. As I creeped websites it seemed that was a popular issue (or isShoe!). Whether you are a serious marathon runner or a fun-runner, your shoes are an important investment – your body’s health depends on it.
When I first started running, I had no clue how important shoes were. I slapped on any old tennies and hit the pavement. I jogged, I walked, and I whined my way through my 3 mile morning treck every morning only to face every kind of lower limb pain there was. My hip hurt, my knees hurt, my feet hurt. At first, I thought this was just the sign of getting old, then Steve suggested I get different shoes. I bought a pair of Asics and all my pains were gone.

As you probably know, a good quality running shoe is only good for 300-500 miles. 300 for a heavier person, 500 for a lighter person. So for my weight and mileage, I (theoretically) should be getting new shoes ever 5 months – and that’s if ALL I did was run in them. However, I honestly always felt like my shoes broke down even before that “expiration” date – and when they started breaking down so did my body.
New Spring In My Step
Then, I discovered a new running shoe that I believe will be the answer to many runner’s shoe woes - Spira running shoe. My girlfriend showed up at my house to run with these CUTE shoes on her feet. (Yes, it’s their black and hot pink good looks that caught my eye first). Then she told me of the cool technology behind the shoe: metal springs! I immediately called the store owner to learn more about the shoes – and the more I learned, the more I loved!
Unlike most shoes, Spira Stinger XLT Running Shoe, also available at Sears (bonus!) doesn’t rely on compression foam and gel for cushion, but uses WaveSpring™ technology. Traditional compression in shoes is designed to absorb the impact, but eventually it breaks down and bottoms out. WaveSpring™

never bottoms out. There are 4 key benefits to this technology:
1. No significant breakdown of the shoe’s cushion
2. High energy return
3. Lowers impact forces
4. Adaptable for different types of shoes and activity
♫♪♬♫♪♬ “I Would Walk 1,000 Miles” ♫♪♬♫♪♬♪

Spira shoes only lost 3% of their cushion after their extensive 1,000 mile testing. (WOW!) To help compare that to other brands, most shoes lose 30% of their cushioning in the first 200 miles. (See! It’s NOT in our head – we are really losing some serious cushion!). As you know, more cushion, less impact – and less injuries.
So I ran in my Spira’s today for the first time and they felt great. They are SUPER light (in case you were wondering if those metal springs were heavy) – and no, I didn’t go faster or bounce higher (don’t laugh, people have asked me this). They probably feel similar to my very first day wearing my Asics (which I’ve always loved by the way), yet Spira says Spiras actually get MORE cushiony as the foam around the spring breaks down because the actual foam absorbs a little of the spring cushion. Just think! A shoe that gets MORE cushiony as you wear it!? Holy Running Batman! This is just

too cool for school.
Although I was already sold on these shoes as soon as I saw the spring and the “guts” of the shoe, to top it off, the winner of the Disney marathon, Brazil’s Freison Costa (pictured above), was sporting Spira’s Stinger Elite SRR 103 (I can TOTALLY See Steve wearing THESE! Oh Snap! (as Kelly Olexa says)

Running is Cheap:
I think this is why so many people get injured running. It’s a cheap fitness program, but the shoes are NOT. If someone is going to run every day they need to protect their bodies at all cost – or change sports.
Testimonial From A Pro:
“I have been a Team Spira Runner since September of 2008, Before September of 2008, I had been training in all other training shoes such as Nike, Adidas, Asics and Reebok, but because of that I kept getting injuries, due to the support of the shoe, not being able to handle the miles a elite marathoner does. I can tell you and give you my 120% truth, that the shoes Spira makes are durable, and with stand able of any kind of mileage, so since joining Spira and training and racing in their shoes, I have not yet to have a set back injury do to the shoe.” Bryan R. Morseman, 2:23 Marathoner

REVIEW: Total Lean 7 Day Fat Loss Kit
This photo makes me understand the phrase “I feel like a fat pig”. This is EXACTLY how I felt after the Holidays. After eating a LOAD OF CRAP, I really needed a totally cleansing. I couldn’t WAIT to rid my body of all that garbage. I wanted to totally purge all the bad and start all the good.
First of all, I have to say I am NOT a fan of diet pills or quick fixes. I do not promote shortcuts and gimmicks. However, I do believe everyone needs a jump-start occasionally. Sometimes we need it physically, and sometimes we need it mentally. This was one of those times for me. (It’s been several YEARS since I’ve done anything like this). So I decided to do a cleanse. Sure, a cleanse is just flushing out your gut, but when your gut feels SO full – it’s a great way to Read the rest of this entry

“I WANT ABS!” 5 Mistakes that Sabotage Success
“I do sit-ups – I do one sit-up a day. I do the first half when I get up in the morning and the second half when I go to bed at night”, Comedian, Mark Lowry.
Everyone wants abs. Whether you want a chiseled six-pack or just want a flat tummy, fit abs are one of the most coveted body parts. The problem is many people are doing the wrong exercises, investing in the wrong fitness tools, and focusing on the wrong things.
Here are 5 common mistakes I see all the time:
1.) People think that abdominal exercises will get rid of belly fat. Wrong! Diet and cardio get rid of belly fat, not abdominal exercises. Yes, you will have shapely muscles UNDER the fat, but if you actually want to SEE your abs, you need to control your eating and burn some calories!
2.) People invest in fitness gadgets that are worthless pieces of junk. The Ab Belt, Ab Lounge, Ab Rocker, Ab Flex and hundreds of other crazy contraptions promising to carve ice cube abdominal muscles. If you really want to invest in something, invest in a good abdominal video, hire a trainer, or take an abs class at your gym so you can learn how to do abs correctly instead of wasting your hard-earned money on useless apparatuses. It’s like Read the rest of this entry
How Much Protein Do I Need?
QUESTION: How much protein do I need?
ANSWER: That depends on your goals. ACSM recommends you take no more than 1gm per poud of body weight, although body builders are known for taking up to 2gms per pound of body weight. I am a 145lbs and I try to get a third of my calories from protein, which (when dieting) equals 100gms of protein or .7gms per pound of my body weight. (THE MATH: 1200 calories x 1/3 = 400 calories divided by 4 (4 calories per gram of protein) = 100gms of protein). The most protein I get is around 130gms of protein while Steve probably gets more like . (I normally have one post workout shake and another shake either in the morning after my run or before bed. Steve averages 190-210gms of protein a day.
Most trainers in the industry suggest .5-.75gms per pound of your ideal body weight for women and 1-2gm per pound of ideal body weight for me. I would say anyone’s minimum should be .5gms of protein per pound of “IDEAL” body weight. For instance, if you are 200lbs but you want to be 150lbs, I’d suggest never dropping below 75gms of protein if you are actively workout. Of course this varies with people’s training, weight goals, existing lean mass, gender, etc – but it’s a good general rule of thumb. Read the rest of this entry
‘High Protein’ Foods Exposed

QUESTION: “I want to increase my protein so I can lose fat and gain muscle. What foods besides eggs, peanut butter, chicken, lima beans are high in protein?” Darryl
ANSWER: Darryl, there’s a difference between a food having protein in it and a food actually being considered a good ‘protein source’. In my opinion, I don’t consider a protein ‘high-protein’ unless it has at least a third of the calories coming from protein.
It’s hard to determine what’s high in protein without looking at all the substrates. There are approximately 4 calories in one gram of protein, 4 calories in one gram of a carbohydrate, 7 calories in a gram of alcohol and 9 calories in a gram of fat. Below are graphs of the foods mentioned so you can visually see the breakdown of each food. Now, let’s see how some of the foods you mentioned weigh in. Read the rest of this entry
Toning Shoes Should Tone Down Their Claims
Over the last few years a new trend of tennis shoes, claiming to tone the legs and glutes, have popped up in every shoe store. Although I believe they have their place, the shoes are misused and misunderstood.
Although each brand of toning shoe may be shaped differently, their message is similar and, in my opinion, their claims are extreme. Do they have their place? I believe so, but people need to know how to use them properly.
Toning shoes are not for every activity. The idea behind toning shoes is they are much more unstable, forcing you to use your leg muscles to stabilize your body. The action is not extreme, but can strengthen stabilization muscles in the legs and improve balance over time.
Will this type of strengthening reshape your legs? Not in my opinion.
Wearing the shoes may slightly increase muscle tone, but Read the rest of this entry
